100% Drive-In, Plus One Part Diner

Andy’s Drive-in is fast becoming my favorite new discovery of this year.

Granted, this year I may have experienced a higher caliber of food, or fancier digs, but so far this year I haven't found a place that I like better for burgers and shakes then here.

Andy’s from the outside, is a little bit deceptive since it looks like its only a drive-in, and at no point do you get the sense that inside there might be anything more than a kitchen area where the car hops are hanging out.  But in reality, Andy’s is also full service diner, complete with a chrome counters and a whole 50’s diner theme!

I’ve started bringing the family here for the awesome burgers, which are hand formed 1/2 lb. beauties that have that bygone era of great diner flavor. The shakes are super thick and hand mixed, and the French fries while not fresh hand cut, are those thick crinkle cut ones, expertly fried and very crispy.

Since Andy’s is also a diner, be sure to look for the blackboard special of the day; last week, they had a homemade sliced roast beef with toast, gravy & homemade mashed potatoes I thought were quite excellent, even if I couldn’t get a good enough picture to do the dish justice.

I’ve tried several of the other drive-in’s in Kenosha, and I have to say, so far, this one has the best food that I’ve experienced.

Drive-in eateries, diner cars and drive-in movie theaters may be some of the best things Americans remember about the 50’s & 60’s.  Sadly everywhere else they are fast disappearing.  In this regard Kenosha is one of the few cities in America where all of these things still exist and seem to thrive.  Kenosha – I love you, thank you, and don’t ever change.

So pull your car into to one of Andy’s drive-in stalls and be sure to drop your window about halfway down. Get your order straight, and then flash your car lights to order, and finally when the mounds of tasty fresh made food come back to you, be sure to tip your friendly car hop well. And then later, when you get back to 2011 and are on your computer, let me know you're thoughts and experiences in the comment box below.

  1. I love Andy's drive in. Great comments. It is very simple the look from the outside but inside is quite cute. Even better is the food! Burgers are fresh, they get the meat several times daily so its really fresh and seasoned! They have velveta cheese upon request for the burger as well (which tastes real great)! The homemade pies are still made by the owner's mother, Evelyn Anderson, they are wonderful (specially the banana cream pie). The price is just amazing, everything is inexpensive and very tasty! FAVORITE DRIVE IN!
