Don’t need any of your Yokohama drama… Makes a great song lyric, but unfortunately it made for a disappointing dinner option tonight.
When I showed up for dinner as a party of one and asked if I could eat at a cooking table. I was informed that the Hibachi cooking tables are only for parties of 2 or more and I was turned away for dinner!
I guess the economy and business is so good, that they just don't need any of those annoying “single” diners taking up valuable table space.
The whole thing just reminds me of one of my previous blog titles: Penny wise, customer foolish...

Those guys did not know what they were missing out on when they turned you away. It's their loss.

Honestly? These tables are usually full of people when it's busy so part of the entertainment is watching them preparing so many things and hustling around the grill- interacting with everyone. And you expected them to do that just for you? Give me a break. I would have felt like a pompous ass if asked them for a private show. YOU are the one who missed out. If you would have sat down and tried their food, you would have been blown away. The best sushi anywhere- hands down.
ReplyDeleteDear Anonymous,
ReplyDeleteJust to be clear, I did not ask for my own table, which would be "pompous" indeed. I simply asked to be seated at ANY cooking table and soundly was refused.
At any other Tappan/Hibachi restaurant in the country, it not uncommon for singles and parties of two to be seated at a single table together in order to make up a full table since the tables are not usually party specific. Sometimes there is a longer wait to fill the tables or get to a number that the restaurant feels comfortable enough to send out a chef.
It's really not a very complex solution to a common problem.
As to having missed out, that was my whole point! IF I had been seated anywhere, I may have enjoyed it, but as it stands today, the world will never know.

That's just bizarre, considering that I went there with a party of 3! Seems they would welcome single diners to "even out" odd numbered parties.
