Liberty Elm Diner – Providence, RI

If ever there was a soft spot in my heart for something of America's rich past, amusement parks, drive-in theaters and classic diners would certainly top the list. And as we all know, these pieces of Americana are a part of something that just doesn't seem to exist in great quantities anymore.

Apparently Rhode Island is known as the birthplace of the diner car, or in my book, the genius behind this important piece of American nostalgia. Since I've been out here, I've defiantly seen more diners and diner cars than anywhere else I've ever been.

As I've driven down Elmwood Street this past month, I've spotted the stunningly sleek Liberty Elm Diner and wished it was open so I could eat there. After all, it's really hard to miss a giant red classic 1940's diner that is in such pristine condition complete with "booth service" stenciled on the sides.

In talking with everyone it was apparent that the Liberty Elm Diner is a labor of love, and they were proud be a part of it.  Even pointing at where Food Networks Drive Ins, Diners & Dives had tagged the wall for an upcoming episode.

My conversation with the waitress that was running the place was as expected, she was quick witted, snappy and funny, but on top of her game and never missed a beat. It was tough to decide what to get for my first visit with fresh baked goods lining the counters, several featured daily specials on the chalkboards' above the main counter, and a full diner style menu of old standbys like burgers and of course all day breakfast!

I went with the breakfast for lunch, something that's rarely in my book of lunch options, but I couldn't resist ordering the fresh local farm eggs and all natural bacon and an oversize pancake with American potatoes.

I enjoyed almost everything; my eggs were perfect, as was the bacon. The pancake was tremendous, while the potatoes were just OK; I thought they were a bit dry from possibly standing too long on the grill. The coffee had some kick and was really good.

I know I'll be back for a breakfast again, maybe even for one of those lunch specials that my waitress said that I should have ordered… "well hon, if you’d been paying attention when I told you about the specials {wink}, you be enjoying some of that great fried chicken too!"

OK, I think I'll just listen next time and order what I'm told.
